From 1 January 1776, the Union flag of Great shows 13 horizontal stripes alternate red and white as well as the Union Jack in the upper left corner of the township. The 13 bands refer to the thirteen British colonies formed after successive annexations and foundations (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island).
Le 14 juin 1777 - soit près d'un an après la proclamation d'indépendance des États-Unis le 4 juillet 1776 - le Congrès officialise un drapeau pour la nouvelle nation to 13 bands plus 13 white stars on blue field (First Flag Act: "Resolved: That the flag of the United States Be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, thats the union Be thirteen stars, white in a blue Field, Representing a New Constellation ").
April 4, 1818, a new congressional resolution states that the number of bands is 13 and that each new state of the Union shall be represented on the blue field of the township by a star. The addition of the star takes place on July 4 following admission of the new state.
