Candlemas

Candlemas? It is the day that the pancakes are prepared with family or friends. You have to flip the pancake with the right hand and if it returns with address (do not let it fall down or catch it all wrinkled), we will be lucky to Candlemas next.

Candlemas is celebrated on February 2, 40 days after Christmas. Its name comes from "candle". One of the origins of this celebration goes back to Roman Parentalia: annual festival in honor of the dead we watched with candles and torches. This festival is also connected to the god Pan; all night, his followers roamed the streets of Rome in carrying torches. They also say that it is a symbolic Celtic; pancake symbolizes the sun gear and the gift to the gods, without which the wheat would be bad this year.

In 472, Pope Gelasius first Christianize the festival that is celebrating the presentation of Jesus in the temple. We then organized a procession with candles. According to popular tradition, it should bring home the lit candle to not die in the year. It also said the flame protected from lightning if it is lit during a thunderstorm. It seems that Pope Gelasius pilgrims rewarded by giving them pancakes.

Then there was another custom, that of the room. Farmers were first pancake blow with his right hand while holding a gold coin in his left hand. Then we rolled up the part in the pancake, which were deposited on top of the cabinet. The following year the piece was recovered and it gave the poor come first.

Today, candlelit processions and rituals have all but disappeared o na preserved the tradition of pancakes.
